OBU-Onslow got back to winning ways at Ngatitoa Domain against a defiant Tawa. It was a gutsy 6-0 win considering the strong cold southerly had a huge bearing on the game.
OBU-Onslow won the toss and elected to head into the wind for the first half. Apart from a few sautés into the Tawa half OBU-Onslow were pinned in there own half. Clearance kicks were not effective as the wind punished likely kickers. Tawa didn’t take their chances when offered and OBU-Onslow’s defence stood strong. This frustrated the Tawa team and as their tempers flared, it often got close to boiling point. Luckily Tawa’s rugby was about as imaginative as there insults and OBU-Onslow’s try line was never threatened.
The second half was a complete turn around from the first, OBU-Onslow camped in the oppositions 22m. Tawa resorted to illegal tactics to slow the ball down and were penalised accordingly. Shane had his kicking boots on and slotted some tough shots at goal.
The game finally erupted into a scrap when Andy was close-lined, and a few fights pursued. The ref finally went to his cards and Willie had 10 minutes in the bin for fighting.
Dick of the day: this week it goes to Craig Fitzgerald. Craig got hit with a cheap late hit and retaliated by punching the Tawa player in the back of the head and ran off. Later Craig found out he’s broken his hand and will be out for the rest of the week. Berney gets a close 2nd, after missing four weeks of rugby it took Berney only 2.5 minutes to be yellow carded.
Man of the Match: Shane Binnie got man of the match for his fine place kicking. At the end of the day it was his penalties that separated the two teams.
Casualty's: Craig - Broken hand, Simon – bruised ribs
Scorers:
Penalty: Shane Binnie 2/2
Yellow cards: Willie Barber, Mark Berney
