On a glorious winter afternoon Wellington and OBU-Onslow went into battle for the third and final time in the season. With both teams battling for second place the result would be pivotal during the business end of the season.
The build up for the match was not ideal, only 10 players turned up to training, the pitch was in a poor state and training was called off early. However a few that were keen to keep the training session alive talked tactics over a pint at the local pub..
Wellington came out strong, their work at the break down was exceptional; they kept good ball control while creating multiple phases. OBU-Onslow had much of what they had under control however under the pump they missed some crucial tackles under the post and paid dearly as Wellington got the maximum 7 points. The game ambled on with Wellington slotting over an easy penalty, the teams went into half time with the score 10-0.
During initial stages of the second half OBU-Onslow shunted in the scrum, the ref deemed it to be too early and gave Wellington a free kick which they took quickly. Wellington got behind the defensive line and spread the ball wide to score in the corner. It was a well executed try, but one that came from no-where.
The game was in Danger of slipping way from OBU-Onslow, much like the first round game at Petone. Apart from some fine kicking from Devos and a few half breaks the team seemed to be going through the motions without much imagination.
Ten minutes into the half Berney flicked the switch, unlike the previous week the aggression was controlled and Wellington got the full furry. The pack embraced the attitude and the team started to play with passion.A fine build up lead to Arthur (don’t KICK it Flux) receiving the pill in the backline, he put boot to ball and as it came off the side of his boot to touch everyone gasped… Miraculously the ball was re-gathered by Cedderwall who then gave an inside ball to Andy, who in turn popped the ball to Arthur to score a try.
The Physic energy (Please refer to the Mex-files) was now with OBU-Onslow who were finishing the stronger. With a penalty 30 meters out OBU-Onslow went for a line out, the forwards put fine rolling maul. The Try was credited to Willie although all the forwards had a hand in it.
It was a great fight back from the OBU-Onslow team; however they left it too late in the game. It was encouraging to see the improvement from the first two games and to be fair there wasn’t a hell of a lot between the two teams. But the day belonged to Wellington as they just hung on to the victory.Final score: Wellington 15 – OBU-Onslow 10
Man of the Match: Andy Carnegie, it seemed like the old boy was everywhere on the pitch (mainly because there were two bald players, cheers Arthur)
Casualty's: Ben N, re-injured his ankle
Scorers:
Tries: Arthur Flux, Willie Barber
Con: Shane Binnie 0/2
Penalty: Shane Binnie 0/1
