Wellington with a comfortable bonus point 27-0 victory over OBU-Onslow on Saturday at windy Petone Rec.
Due to the wet conditions earlier in the week the game had a late change of venue from Prince of Wales Park to Petone Rec (supposedly a home game!). Considering the conditions during the week the track was dry, however a strong cold southerly would dictate the type of rugby that would be played.
Wellington won the toss and elected to play with the wind, which paid dividends in the first 3 minutes when they scored close to the sticks. This was a slap in the face for OBU-Onslow who woke from their slumber and started to play near perfect into the wind rugby. OBU-Onslow exerted huge amounts of pressure which caused Wellington to infringe to prevent OBU-Onslow go forward. After repeated penalties the ref sent one of Wellington’s props to the sin-bin for 10 minutes. Unfortunately OBU-Onslow couldn’t convert the extra man into points and Wellington scored another try and penalty to go into the break with a healthy lead.
Even though OBU-Onslow was 15 points down, it was thought that the wind was a 15 point advantage. Wellington was never going to lye down and they played some good rugby, there loosies in particular had a fine game isolating OBU-Onslow players and winning on the ground. OBU-Onslow didn’t help there cause by over committing players to rucks and not using the wind to best effect.
Considering the weather and the quality of rugby the team had great support. All Wellington had was ex All Black James Ryan…
Man of the match: Everyone fronted up; however there was no stand out on the day.
Dick of the Day: This one goes to the Wellington Full back. During the second half OBU-Onslow kicked the ball into the Wellington in-goal. The fullback had a meltdown and took the ball over the try line only to realise OBU had a good chase, Instead of kicking the ball out he took the ball back over the try line and placed the ball down.. Filthy Player of the Day: Robbie Taylor got the filthy player award. He may have got this by default as Berney wasn’t playing and Pom’s only got half a game and therefore wasn’t on long enough to be spotted doing something he shouldn’t.
