OBU-Onslow vs J'ville

On a cold/windy but dry afternoon OBU-Onslow managed to secure close 10-8 win over Johnsonville at Ian Galloway Park. The build up was dominated by lack of players and weigh in obligations which meant preparation was not ideal.

Due to the lacklustre build up OBU-Onslow were a left a little flat in the initial contests. The deadlock was broken first by OBU-Onslow who had repeated attacks on J’ville’s try line repeled, they were soon to be rewarded with 3 Points when Shane converted a regulation shot at goal. J’ville evened the score up shortly after, and pulled further way with a cheeky cross kick from within their half, re-gathered and managed to strip the last line of defence to run 50 metres to score a good try. OBU-Onslow muscled up and Jerome scored determined try and with Shane’s conversion the OBU-Onslow went into the half with a two point advantage.

It was unsure whether OBU-Onslow had done enough as J’ville had what was thought to be a 10-15 point wind advantage in the second half. The Johnsonville team were intent to run at the opposition and didn’t deploy a sensible kicking game to apply pressure. OBU-Onslow defence held and the team didn’t concede any silly penalty’s in a kickable position. Both teams had a player in the sin-binned, but J’ville couldn’t make any inroads into the OBU-Onslows defence with the extra space

Big ups to Paul, Churhman Junior replied to the team SOS and turned up to play when we were struggling for numbers. This was the first time Paul and Jerome had played in the same rugby team and Paul didn’t disappoint and had a fine game.

Moment of the match: About 25 minutes into the second half OBU-Onslow started a rolling maul from within their 40m mark and drove 30m down to J’ville’s twenty two.

Man of the match: Ben Neilson, Ben’s ability to adapt to playing at inside centre in a make shift backline is worthy of player for the day alone, but it was his defence especially the try saving tackle in the second half which turned it. The tackle personified OBU-Onslow’s defence.

Dick of the Day: This goes to Andy Carnegie, for wearing white shoes to the game. Apparently Shane Binnie has taken upon himself to become the fashion guru since appearing in an issue of M2 magazine. The team look forward to future fashion tips from Shane.

Filthy Player of the Day: Arthur gets this illustrious accolade in his first game back for OBU-Onslow. Arthur was unlucky to be sent off in the first place after a gentle shove from Ardie was replied with a tap on the chin from the J'ville player.

Casualty's: None

Eastbourne Vs.OBU-Onslow

OBU-Onslow got their JC Bowl competition off to the best possible start on Saturday with an enthralling 12-11 win over Eastbourne at HW Shortt Park.

In a tight game neither forward pack exerted dominance for any period of time, OBU-Onslow forwards provided a steady platform to attack and Willie opened up Eastbourne’s defence with a simple 2 up move from within their own half. Unfortunately like a lot of promising moves Eastbourne’s scramble defence did enough to close them down each time. Again it was thanks to Shane’s boot where all OBU-Onslows points came from.

The second half was a torrid affair, Eastbourne pilled on the pressure with constant attacks close to OBU-Onslow’s try line. The line finally broke with about 10mins to spare, they utilised the extra man advantage and broke down the blind side. Fortunately for OBU-Onslow the usually consistent Eastbourne number 10 missed the conversion and OBU-Onslow held out the rest of the match to earn a one point victory.

Moment of the match: Much like the Hurricane’s game the previous week the game had bit of controversy. In the late stages of the first half Eastbourne had a shot at goal which shaved the up right. Eastbourne's touch judge gave it however Simon waved the penalty way.

Man of the match: Lavy put in a huge effort and was rewarded with player of the day and a dislocated shoulder..

Dick of the Day: Ryan has out done himself and has taken dick of the day from Andy. The following is an extract from an email Ryan sent.... Take into account this is after a few beers at the Cambridge then the Bristol...

"The house was locked when i got home on sat night, jack was asleep, banging on window for 20 min no result. was ready to break window to get in, when saw an open windows upstairs. proceed to get on roof ,which i didn't realise was covered in dew, slipped off fell 5 1/2 meters on the grass below. thankfully i am still alive. fall was broken about 3 meters down by the handrail of the stairs which i collected with my hip and thigh then bounced off on to the grass landing on my head. good times. got up and walked myself to a & e where i was for 3 hours."

Ryan thats gona take a lot to beat this season.. I think you are up for an almighty fine!!

Filthy Player of the Day: Ben Pomare, Pom's basically got the filth of the day before he got on the pitch, his slapping of an Eastbourne player and then admitting ''Yes, yes I did just slap you'' also contributed. Linvingston got a "get out of Jail free'' card from Pom's, he defiantly owes him one after his sin-binning offence was ignored...

Casualty's: Andy and Lavy Dislocated shoulders
Willie Barber Foot
Mark Berney's Back injury will have him out for 4 weeks
Ryan's late night Spider Man impression didn't pay off and he will be out for at least 2 weeks

The Scorers:
For OBU-Onslow:
Pens: Binnie 4/5
For Eastbourne:
Try, Penalty x2

Yellow Cards: James Linvingston

OBU-Onslow Vs Paremata-Plimmerton (Grading)

In wet conditions OBU-Onslow were in control of their first game of the season, and with the accurate boot of Shane were able to secure a 12-0 win over Paramata-Plimerton which will ensure they remain in 80/80 division one.

The forwards laid a great platform for the backs to consistently stick to their game plan. The weather was always going to dictate the style of rugby that could be played. Mike, Ben and Shane peppered the touch line with good touch finders all game, and with good chasing/tackling by all wingers and chases paramata were always under the pump. Its fair to say Paramata were not of div 1 quality, however it was still satisfying to restrict them to zero points.

Moment of the match: During the half time break Warwick had asked for a big scrum first up after the break. He didn’t have to wait long as it came in the opening minutes of the second half. The forwards didn't disappoint, blowing Parramata off the mark.

Man of the match: Another top performance from Ryan. You could say it was typical performance from the little big man as he consistently performed to this level all last year.

Blouse of the Day: Ben Bakker, for his Air Guitar knee slide before throwing the ball away to concede a penalty.

Filthy Player of the Day: Mark Berney, Old dirty Bernie got the DVD “Built For Filth”. Its gona take something special for someone to pip Mark each week for this prize.. My money is on Pomare?

Casualty: Taylor broke his hand and will be out for up to 6 weeks.
Mike Ceaderwell; corked thigh; one week.

The Scorers:
For OBU-Onslow:
Pens: Binnie 4/5
